Life Hacks for Virtual Schooling at Lake Grapevine

If COVID-19 has you virtually schooling your children for the 2020-21 school year, it may be possible for you to educate them while you enjoy a vacation. Lake Grapevine is an awesome getaway for the family that enjoys water recreational activities like boating and fishing. Since returning to school this year, over 2,000 Texas public school students have tested positive for COVID-19, which is further motivation for many parents to undertake virtual schooling.

Life Hacks for Virtual Schooling

If you’ve decided to school your children virtually this year, try these learning hacks as you enjoy some family time at Lake Grapevine.

  1. Create virtual school workstations - To cut down on distractions and keep your children focused on learning, take a cue from one mom who created virtual workstations for her children simply using presentation boards.
  2. Set up a cell phone charging center - One distraction many public schools have reported in recent years are personal cell phones in the classrooms. Students end up spending more time texting with each other than doing class work. While public school teachers may not be able to take phones, Mom can. Set up a charging station for your entire family and keep all the phones at that one location in the house. Students can have them at break time.
  3. Establish a home network - If your children log into virtual school on multiple devices throughout the day, you can save a lot of time by networking your devices to allow students to login to virtual school quickly from any device.
  4. Ask if your school gives credit for life experiences - Many colleges and universities offer students credit for life experiences. Since students in primary and secondary schools frequently take field trips and get learning credit for them, ask your virtual school administrator if a trip to Lake Grapevine would qualify as learning credit. You never know, they may say “Yes.”
  5. Stream classroom training to your TV - If you have a smart TV, you may be able to stream Zoom classroom meetings and other online lectures to your TV. If you don't have a smart TV, you can still stream live video to your television with a wifi adapter.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Dec. 18)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 58 degrees; 1.30 feet below pool. White bass continue to transition to a winter pattern so be prepared to move frequently from shallow points to deep water. The best days have light winds out of the south. Some fish are stacking in deep water and can be caught on slabs with a stinger hook. Report by Omar Cotter, Luck O’the Irish Fishing Guide Service.
